Writing an Effective Artist Statement
An artist statement is the artist’s introduction to his/her viewers. It is a description of his/her’s work or project and gives a clear idea about what the concept behind the work of art is, as well as any other influencing factor. Your artist statement will reflect the process of your art work and your journey as an artist. It doesn’t have to be long winded, one to three paragraphs will do. Here are some steps to writing an Effective Artist Statement:
Step 1
Briefly introduce yourself- Be creative, you don’t necessarily have to start by saying "My name is…" You can mention how you began your journey as a young artist, or where you live, just be sure that it is relevant to your work and theme.
Step 2
Describe the artwork- More specifically your artwork. What does it look like, What is your theme, What is the subject matter, Are there any special elements of art, art style etc you are using, how did you go about creating the works.
Step 3
What are somethings you learned while creating this body of work
What was your inspiration/How has your selected artist influenced your work.
Step 4
Close by explaining are your goals as an artist, what do you want your viewers to experience when they look at your work.
Make sure your artist statement is clear, to the point and consistent. Throughout your journal, avoid overly stylish, illegible fonts, stick to good old Times New Roman font, size twelve just be to safe.
Remember your word limit is one thousand words , so avoid flooding your journal with words just to fill up space. Keeping your journal’s content RELEVANT is key.
